New Year…New You? Setting Realistic Goals & Actually Achieving Them

Happy New Year to everyone reading this! Yes, I know I am 10 days late, but you know what they say, better late than never. I don’t know about you all, but this holiday season is a bit of a blur. It came fast but then took forever to get through (if that makes any sense to you). Anyway, it’s a new year, which means new goals, new desires, new everything… right?

The majority of people give up on new year's resolutions by now and if you’re a mom you were lucky if you made it 72 hours into 2024 before those resolutions went out the window. Now this isn’t a dig at anyone, especially my mom friends out there. We have a lot going on. It’s a good wakeup call though because as moms we struggle to keep it together when we are just trying to control the basics. So, throwing in unrealistic goals for yourself on top of everything else isn’t fair to you. Everyone always starts the year with “New Year, New Me”. How about instead of being so drastic with our decision making in 2024 we tone it down a little and set some goals that are achievable based on our everyday lives? Scaling back some on your goals doesn’t make them any lesser than your uppity sister in-laws “go big or go home” goals. What are some simple changes that you can make that would get you closer to the big impossible feeling goal? Now, let's get something straight here you still need to keep your eyes on that crazy, huge, amazing goal you want to accomplish. This is just a more realistic approach to accomplishing it without getting discouraged a week in and giving up because you feel like you’ve made ZERO progress. So here we go….whip out that paper, vision board or just a spiral notebook and write down what your goal or goals are. Then below that I want you to write down all the changes you can start making today to get you closer to that goal. Start off by listing the little things that you can change RIGHT NOW down to the some of the harder changes. I’ll use myself as an example. I want 2024 to be the healthiest year of my life.  I’m talking about inside and out! Now we all know this isn’t going to happen overnight, hell this isn’t even happening in 30 days, BUT it’s my goal and I’m going to accomplish it. Below is how my list of changes looks so far:

  1. Drink more water – 1 gallon a day

  2. Start taking daily multivitamins

  3. Be more active – walk outside 30 minutes each day

  4. Read 10 pages from a book each day

  5. Go to bed earlier (to get 7-8 hours of sleep)

  6. No Fried food

  7. Add a 30-minute workout to my day (addition to walk)

  8. Limit carbs to 1x a day

These are changes I can start making right away while still managing my circus of a life with kids and dogs. I start my list with the easier things and progress to things that are a bit harder. This list is personal to me as yours should be personal to you. Maybe giving up carbs is no big deal for you while I’m over here dreaming of pizza and tostadas. We’re just built differently! No matter what your goal is or what is on your pathway list to get to your goal, it’s still a progressive system that will help give you the confidence that you can achieve your goal. Everything doesn’t have to be “go big or go home” sometimes baby steps are just as good! If your 2024 goals have anything to do with being healthier, I suggest you get yourself a snack or 3 before you start that list!
